Three questions to ask yourself before renovating.
Whether you’re planning on an extensive renovation or a smaller refurbishment project, we like to recommend clients consider these three questions before commencing.
1. What purpose will this project serve? Are you renovating or refurbishing for functionality reasons or purely aesthetics? Is the project to assist in selling your home or renting it out in the future? What individual needs does my family have in relation to this project? For some clients, these questions come easily but for others, they force you to consider the intended outcome of the project. This also allows your builder to ensure the specifications of the project are tailored to your individual requirements and they can make suggestions on how to improve this for you. For example, a family wanting to transform their outdoor area might consider if they plan on entertaining in that space, or needs often change if a family has young children or teenagers in the house. Those with young children and pets might appreciate more lawn area and others might like to reduce maintenance and prefer entertaining on a decking area.
2. Budget, budget, budget.Without having a realistic idea of pricing, it is nearly impossible for clients to effectively plan a renovation or refurbishment project in the home. This can lead to significant stress and potentially financial pressure due to overspending. On a personal note, it takes the shine out of the project being enjoyable which is not what your builder wants!
